Build a foundation for lasting recovery from addiction

Is Modafinil Bad for Your Heart Health?

Modafinil, also called Provigil, is a central nervous system stimulant used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity, sleep disorders, and narcolepsy. The drug works on the body by stimulating neurotransmitters in the brain, including ones that produce dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin.

Differences of Modafinil in Compare To Other Stimulant Drugs

Modafinil is different from other stimulant drugs like Adderall or Ritalin because it does not contain amphetamines. Some people may think this makes it safer to use, but every drug out there comes with its own set of risks.

Modafinil and the Effects it May Have on Your Heart

Everyone knows that no drug is trouble-free, even things like Tylenol come with risks, And Modafinil can be very dangerous for people with an underlying heart condition. People with a history of cardiac disease or hypertension should not take Modafinil. After all, it raises a person’s blood pressure because it is a central nervous system stimulant.

Modafinil Cause Irregular Heartbeat?

Since Modafinil is a drug that promotes wakefulness, it can also cause irregular heartbeat, chest pain, high blood pressure and can even cause serious problems like a heart attack. While it is a rare occurrence, it does still happen. Those who take this drug as prescribed and do not have any previous heart problems, and are generally healthy are not at high risk for heart problems related to Modafinil, but that is not to say it does not happen. It has been shown that Modafinil does have a significant elevation in blood pressure and heart rate, but it is usually not a level of danger. Some common side effects of Modafinil use can include headaches, nausea, nervousness, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. It is not recommended to take this drug if you have any type of cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure and arrhythmia.

Can Modafinil Be Abused?

When Modafinil is taken as a doctor prescribes it, it is a very effective drug for treating. Still, this drug can cause similar effects to cocaine or amphetamines when taken without a prescription or not as prescribed. Its ability to stimulate your brain can cause euphoric effects, making it a good candidate for abuse and addiction.

Signs and Symptoms of Modafinil Misuse

Since it does not contain the ingredient amphetamine as Adderall or Ritalin does, many people may believe it is a safer option and underestimate its dangers. Modafinil can be just as addictive as its stronger, amphetamine cousins. Signs and symptoms that Modafinil is being abused can include:

  • Trouble falling and staying asleep
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Hallucinations
  • Excessive sweating
  • Skin peeling
  • Lying about taking Modafinil
  • Doctor shopping
  • Being consumed with getting the next dose
  • Developing a tolerance
  • Continuing abuse despite any harmful effects on the body and mind
  • Overdose

Once physical dependence and addiction to Modafinil have set in, withdrawal from Modafinil will occur when the drug is no longer taken or when a lower dose is taken. The brain has a strong reaction when Modafinil is not taken. Once dependence and addiction have developed, your body no longer knows how to function properly without it. While withdrawal symptoms are not as extreme or life-threatening as other drugs, they still are not fun to deal with. Symptoms can include depression, anxiety, lack of motivation or energy, fatigue, and breathing problems.
