What is Delta-8 THC?

It seems like everywhere you go now, you will see gas stations, vape shops, smoke shops, and even dispensaries advertising Delta-8 THC in some places. Delta-8 THC is even being advertised on social media. Delta-8 THC has quickly risen into popularity, especially over the past year, but what is it?

Will Delta-8 THC Get You High?

Delta-8 THC is less potent and exhibits less psychotropic effects than THC when it is ingested or inhaled; however, it can deliver the same intoxicating effects as regular THC. So yes, Delta-8 THC will get you high. However, many people report that they still feel clear-minded when ingesting Delta-8 THC and that it doesn’t cause the anxiety and paranoia the regular THC can cause. In addition, it is said to offer a much milder and smoother euphoria than Delta-9 THC.

What is Delta-8 THC and Where Can You Get It?

Delta-8 THC is a minor cannabinoid native to cannabis. It is mainly derived from the hemp plant but can also be extracted from cannabis. It is a psychoactive cannabinoid and is an isomer of delta-9 THC (regular THC). Delta-8 THC is a degraded form of delta-9 THC. When regular THC or delta-9 THC is stored for long periods, it turns into delta-8 THC. Delta-8 THC is federally legal because it is technically derived from hemp. However, states can override federal law, and some states have, so currently, it is only legal in 39 states. The University of Virginia School of Medicine defines delta-8 THC in their ToxTalks Bulletin.

Delta-8 THC is a chemical compound of the cannabis plant Cannabis sativa. Delta-8 THC occurs naturally in very small concentrations but can be extracted and concentrated from hemp and marijuana plants. It can also be aesthetically derived by converting CBD into delta-8 THC. It is structurally similar to delta-9 THC, but delta-8 THC is reportedly less potent and less psychotropic. The use of Delta-8 THC appears to have significantly increased in popularity over the past year. Clinical studies are lacking, and health benefits are anecdotal.  (Virginia.edu)

Side Effects of Delta-8 THC Abuse

Delta-8 THC has similar effects and side effects to regular THC or Delta-9 THC. It produces mild euphoria, happiness, and uplifting feelings. It is also said to provide pain relief, help with insomnia, and be antiemetic. Some of the side effects of Delta-8 THC can include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Increased appetite

It is important to note that Delta-8 THC hasn’t been studied extensively. More research is needed to determine any other possible effects it may have on the mind and body.
