Suboxone Treatment for Opioid Addiction

a doctor gives a script of suboxone treatment for opioid addiction

Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts millions of people from all walks of life, most of whom become consumed by opioid addiction without understanding how they got there. Our nation’s current opioid epidemic directly results from the overuse of prescription painkillers, which doctors were initially led to believe were safe and nonaddictive.

Massachusetts has been deeply affected by the opioid crisis. Evoke Wellness at Cohasset is dedicated to being part of the solution to ending this crisis. Our suboxone clinic in Cohasset, about 30 minutes southeast of Boston, provides exceptional, personalized treatment for individuals with OUD.

What Is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone that chemically work together to reduce the intensity of cravings and withdrawal symptoms from opioids. It binds to the receptors in the brain that crave opioids but doesn’t activate them to create the “high” associated with opioid use.

Suboxone contains 80% buprenorphine and 20% naloxone, which work in the following ways:

  • Buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning that it targets the same receptors as opioids but binds to them more tightly, dulling the euphoric effects.
  • Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that attaches to opioid receptors to block and reverse the effects of other opioids.

Opioid agonists like heroin, oxycodone, and morphine activate pain-blocking receptors in the brain and release tremendous amounts of endorphins that mimic extreme pleasure. This “opioid effect” can quickly lead to dependency and addiction because the brain continually seeks that rush of endorphins.

By blocking the receptors in the brain that crave opioids, Suboxone prevents it from sending signals that cause cravings and withdrawal symptoms. If other opioids are taken while on Suboxone, they will not create the desired effects.

Successful treatment for OUD relies on a combination of therapy and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). MAT using Suboxone allows patients to receive medication in a safe and controlled environment. As Suboxone eliminates cravings and withdrawal symptoms, patients can return to a state of mind that will enable them to address the underlying causes of OUD.

Suboxone treatment involves four phases:

  1. Intake phase – Patients undergo an intake assessment, including a thorough medical and psychosocial evaluation. A blood test and urine drug screen verify that the patient has abstained from opioid use for at least 12 to 24 hours.
  2. Induction phase – Doctors work with patients to find the appropriate dose to relieve withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
  3. Stabilization phase – With the physical symptoms of dependency under control, patients can begin counseling and other therapeutic interventions, including treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, or trauma.
  4. Maintenance phase – Patients continue to take the appropriate dose of Suboxone as directed by their doctor.

The dose of Suboxone and how long it is needed varies between individuals based on factors such as the severity of opioid use disorder, underlying mental health conditions, and support systems. Studies have shown that individuals who stop using Suboxone within six months of starting treatment have a higher risk of relapse.
